ENGLISH ESSAY DROUGHT

Introduction:- Like flood and cyclone drought is also a natural calamity. Due to failure of rain drought occurs. It means the acute dryness. Drought is deadlier than flood or cyclone.

Cause:- In our state the rain depends on the monsoon. When monsoon breaks rain occurs. But monsoon is uncertain in Orissa. Some year it comes very early and some year comes very late. Some year it carries plenty of water and some year it comes dry. So it becomes the year of drought. As the forests are now thinned away, they lose the power of drawing the clouds.

General condition:- The heat of the sun becomes terrible. All are parched by the scorching rays of sun. It burns up the green vegetation. Crops ruined. Grasses become dry and pale. Water in rivers, ponds, reservoirs dries up. All the living beings suffer from scarcity of water. Famine breaks out.

Drought in Orissa:- The people of Orissa face the drought time to time. In 1866 a terrible drought took place all over Orissa. It caused the death of one-third of people. In the year of 1966 the districts of Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Boudh, Kandhamal, Sundargarh and Sambalpur were greatly affected by drought. People died like insects. Crops could not thrive. People and their animals starved, for a long period. Acute famine broke out. The Government provided relief to the people.
Reliefs from the other states of the Country came in plenty. As the coming of monsoon is uncertain in our state, we face drought in most of years.

Conclusion:- Prevention is better than cure. Advance provision of relief should be made. Scientific measures should be taken. Artificial rain can also be projected. Large stock of food should be preserved. Thus we can check a drought or its ravage.
