India is a country of villages and farmers. Most of its people depend upon agriculture. The farmers are the backbone of our country. They produce the food crops and feed the people.

The Indian farmer lives in a village. He is always busy. He does not care the Sun and shower, cold and air. He is an ardent worker. He works from the dawn to dust. He does not have much rest. He ploughs the land, sows the seeds. He takes care of the crops. He guards the crops against stray cattle and thieves. He reaps the crops and carries them to his home by means of bullock carts. Bullocks are his main assets for cultivation. He takes proper care of his bullocks. He becomes happy to reap the crops. He forgets his pains. His wife and children help him in his work.

Financially the Indian farmer is not so sound. He is a poor fellow. He cannot maintain his family smoothly. He wears a piece of coarse cloth. He cannot buy saree, dress, ornaments for his wife and children. He cannot give his children higher education. He is illiterate. Sometimes he is harassed by the money lenders.

The Indian farmer cannot enjoy his life like others. He celebrates the social functions in the simplest way. He celebrates many festivals throughout the year. Sunia, Nuakhai, Manabasa are celebrated by him with great interest.

Neglecting agriculture no country can achieve progress. Hence our government is now trying for the development of the farmers. They learn through night schools, adult education centers. They are trained in modern method of cultivation. They are supplied with good seeds, manures and modern apparatus.
