Introduction

    There is a saying "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." This proverb very well underlines the value of sports. Games and sports are essential for the all-round development and growth of body as well as mind. The neglect of health results in sickness which badly affects both mind and soul. Sports activities make one's body healthy, robust and free from diseases.

Usefulness

    Games teach sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is a combination of qualities like team-spirit, discipline, co-operation, fairplay and taking victories and defeats in the proper spirit. Games are an essential part of education. Books and lectures provide food for the mind, whereas games provide food for the body which is the abode of mind.

Essential for health

    Physical activities provide an outlet for corporeal and mental development. They make us smart and adventurous. They help us regain our lost energy. We breathe pure and fresh air in the open playgrounds. Physical exercises tone up our muscles, strengthen our bones and make us energetic. They teach us the value of discipline, co-operation and dignity of manual labour. Games develop the sense of unity, equality and team-spirit among the players. It helps us become more socialised.

Keep the youth engaged

    Games and sports also help in character-building. Just as the players accept defeat and victory in games and sports, so they accept failures and successes in life. Through games and sports we are able to make the best use of our leisure. It has been found that usually the boys who aren't fond of games and sports, are easily motivated by unsocial persons to do undesirable things. Games and sports keep the youth busy in a healthy way which is very beneficial for the society.

New trend

    Now-a-days the success in games brings fame and money as well. Reputed players are treated as national heroes. The renowned players are offered lucrative jobs by well-established companies and Government as well. The Govt. have constituted a statutory body for the development of sports and games in the country. It is called SAI (Sports Authority of India). It has established several institutions to train sportsmen and sports- women for improving their performance. At Patiala Netaji Subhas National Institute of sports was founded in 1961. MRF pace Foundation of Chennai is imparting training to the bowlers of cricket.

Conclusion

    In spite of all these measures, India is yet to achieve its goal. It is far behind the USA, Russia, Australia, Japan and China in this sphere. Physical education must be made compulsory at school and college level. The old proverb "A sound mind in a sound body" must always be borne in mind.
