ENGLISH ESSAY MODERN INDIAN WOMEN
Introduction
Modern Indian women are very different from their counter- parts of yester-years. In the ancient period the women of India enjoyed much freedom. With the Islamic invasion, the Hindus were forced to confine their women within four walls of their homes. The reason was that there was the risk of their women being molested or forcibly taken away by the invading outsiders. Gradually the social customs of the Hindus degraded to such an extent that the inhuman practice of sati, child marriage, ban on the marriage of widows etc. prevailed upon the society. So the women lost their ancient glory, they were reduced to mere house-hold drudges.
Status during British-raj
During the rule of the Britishers the condition of women didn't improve much. In every household, the male child was considered to be an asset whereas the female child was considered to be a liability. So the female child was very much neglected. The female child was denied the facilities of education, equal status and freedom of movement. She could move out of the house only with a male escort. She was not allowed to take up jobs.
The concern of free India
Gradually the situation started changing. New leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Ballavbhai Patel, Bijoylaxmi Pandit, Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, K.M. Munshi, Purusottam Das Tandon etc. realised that without the upliftment of the status of women, India whould never prosper. The first step for the upliftment of women is access to education. After India got independence, education was given top priority. Schools were established in remote villages. Separate girls' schools were set up for the girls. There was facility for co-education in other schools. With the education of girls. they came to know that they are not inferior to boys in any respect. The educated girls started asserting themselves.
Today's women
Today Indian women are advancing in every field. They not only study Humanities and science, but also study computer technology, medical science and engineering. They have entered even the army. They are now working as ministers, Governors and High Court Judges.
Some eminent women
Mrs. Bijoy Laxmi Pandit, Sarojini Naidu, Late Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, Dr. Sushila Nayar, Sucheta Krupalini, our late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi are some of the famous Indian women of modern times. They have proved their integrity, worth and calibre in their departments with great success.
They can do any job
Now women are working as teachers, executives, I.A.S officers and I.P.S officers. Some are MPs and MLAs. But most of them come from urban middle class families. The fate of the women of remote villages have not chaged much. Of course, education is spreading among the girls. They are no longer confined to their homes nor are considered as breeding machines. The constitution of India guarantees them equal status with the males.
Conclusion
All the drawbacks in the path of the upliftment of women are not yet removed. The dowry system is still in vogue. In some families, women are not allowed to earn their livelihood independently. The rural poor don't send their girls to schools." Some of them are against higher education of girls. We have to root out these bad ideas. The educated women have a greater role to play for the upliftment of the status of women. The women should not hesitate to do any kind of job. They must be strong- minded. We must always remember that the mankind kind consists of both male and female. One part will not survive without the other.
